SAN FRANCISCO, May 28, (THEWILL) – There is an uneasy disquiet in the Delta State House of Assembly following revelations showing how the Speaker of the House, Sheriff Oborevwori in collaboration with senior officials allegedly siphoned close to a billion naira meant for the Assembly.
In a leaked memo obtained Monday from a reliable source in the office of the Accountant General, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had in August 2018, approved and reversed the monthly subvention to the Assembly to N150M from N100m with effect from Jan 2018.
However, the Speaker in collaboration with two senior officials allegedly diverted the increment, which is about N1bn without the knowledge of the Deputy Speaker, other principal officers of the Assembly, as well as members.
One peeved civil servant who felt the heist was inhuman especially considering the excruciating financial conditions and debilitating political atmosphere most members went through in the last four years decided to leak the close-kept secret to some members of the Assembly.
This led the Speaker to adjourn the sitting that was meant to hold today, Tuesday the 28Th, in order to prevent a showdown with his colleagues as well as doctor documents.
“It is sad that the same financial impropriety that consumed the erstwhile Speaker, Monday Igbuya seems to be what may consume Mr. Sheriff,” one employee of the Assembly told THEWILL.
“For a man touted to have Governorship ambition in 2023 to be linked with such scandalous thievery is indeed a disgrace”.
A government source said the EFCC and the ICPC have been petitioned to investigate the finances of the Assembly under the embattled Speaker, who narrowly escaped impeachment some weeks back.
