March 09, (THEWILL) – At least two staff of the Lagos State Government have been confirmed killed and several others injured on Thursday, following an early morning accident, which involved a Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) train and a bus from the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, near PwD bus stop, before Oshodi.

First responders have since arrived at the scene and rescue activities are currently ongoing.

According to eyewitness reports, the BRT bus got crushed by the train while trying to cross the railway crossing at Shogunle.

“The BRT bus was crossing the railway track at Shogunle when it got hit by the train. The BRT bus shouldn’t have attempted to cross because the train was already nearby.

“The train ran into the BRT bus at Shogunle and dragged it along the rail track up to PwD area,” an eyewitness said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq, who confirmed the sad incident, said the bus was used to convey staff of the Lagos State Government.

Also, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency in Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “Two dead adult female staff of the State Government and several injured, have been evacuated.

“The State Government staff bus was trying to cross the PWD/Sogunle rail crossing while the train coming into Lagos from Abeokuta trapped the bus on its rail,” he added.

In a related development, one person has been feared dead in multiple accidents involving a trailer, an 18-seater bus belonging to GUO motors, a Sienna car, Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Matrix car.

The crash occurred on Thursday morning, February 9, on the Kara Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and has caused heavy gridlock on the bridge inwards OPIC.

The gridlock has also extended beyond Berger affecting outbound movement to Lagos.

According to eyewitness reports, the trailer rammed the vehicles from behind, which led to the Toyota Matrix car falling off the bridge.

The number of casualties is currently unknown. However, the unconscious body of a hawker was seen lying on the road.
