SAN FRANCISCO, September 26, (THEWILL) – A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Benin, Professor Augustine Alenezela Orhue, Thursday identified ignorance amongst couples as one of the major problems of infertility and childbearing in Nigeria.
Prof. Orhue disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
He said though infertility can be traced to some biological dysfunction on either couple, he reaffirmed the existence of advance medical procedures to cure the problem.
“Some couple of months back, as the Head of the Department, we were able to carry out, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, (UBTH) the first IVF conception and delivery successfully through the aid of this technology,” the Professor of Medicine said.
He further admonished persons with fertility issues to take advantage of advancement in medicine to remedy the shortcoming whilst advising government to establish institutions and centres dedicated exclusively to tackle cases of infertility in the country.
