BEVERLY HILLS, November 17, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Kogi West senatorial rerun election between controversial politician, Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Senator Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress, APC, inconclusive.
Returning officer, Professor Olayinde Lawal premised his decision to declare the keenly contested poll inconclusive on the difference between the votes polled by Adeyemi and Melaye (20, 570), which is less than the 43,127, registered voters in 53 polling units where elections were canceled or did not hold because of irregularities.
According to him, Senator Adeyemi polled 80,118 votes, while Senator Melaye got 59,548 votes from the seven Local Government Areas in the senatorial district.
The returning officer said he is constrained by the electoral law to declare a winner because of the issue.
INEC will subsequently announce a new date for the completion of the election only in areas affected.
