May 21, (THEWILL) – Mixed reactions have trailed Nollywood actress, Osa Ighodaro’s win, as the ‘Best Actress in Drama’, at the just concluded Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCA 2023.
The award ceremony took place on Saturday, at the Eko Hotel. Winners of the award were determined through a process of voting which started after the nominees were announced a few weeks ago.
The voting process was supervised by judges appointed by Multichoice and Africa Magic, based on their pedigree in the entertainment industry.
Veteran filmmaker, Femi Odugbemi, was the head of the team of judges who supervised the process.
Ighodaro had won an award for her feature in ‘Man of God’. The award category had other talented thespians such as Nse Ikpe Etim in ‘Shanty Town’, Bimbo Ademoye in ‘Anikulapo’, Queen Nwokoye role in ‘Strained’, and Scarlet Gomez in ‘Wura’.
However, despite the transparent process involved, Ighodaro’s acting was criticised and her acting prowess was compared to other actresses in her category with some naysayers disagreeing that she didn’t deserve the award.
The judges of the prestigious award were also accused of favouritism because it was the second time in a row that Ighodaro will be winning that category.
In spite of the negative reactions trailing her win, some of her fans have applauded her for her role interpretation in ‘Man of God’.
A few of her fans who have watched the drama applauded the scriptwriter and the choice of characters used in the drama.
She was also praised for her energy and her versatile nature as an actress.
