February 05, (THEWILL) — Africa’s largest mobile network operator, MTN Group, is in advanced discussions to acquire the roughly 75 percent stake in IHS Holding Limited (IHS Towers) that it does not already own, in a deal that could be valued at about $2.76 billion, Reuters and other media report.
In a cautionary announcement to investors, MTN confirmed it is considering a transaction to gain full ownership of IHS, one of the world’s leading independent telecommunications tower infrastructure companies.
The potential offer price is expected to be close to IHS’s last trading price on the New York Stock Exchange, where its shares have risen in recent weeks.
MTN already holds a significant minority stake in IHS one of its largest infrastructure partners and the buyout would mark a major strategic shift, taking critical network infrastructure back under operator control after years of outsourcing tower assets.
Tower infrastructure has become a strategic priority as mobile data demand grows and network expansion accelerates across Africa.
The company stressed that no definitive agreement has been reached, and there is no certainty that the deal will be completed.
MTN advised shareholders to exercise caution while trading its securities until further updates are released.
If concluded, the acquisition could have a material impact on MTN’s financial performance and long-term capital allocation strategy.
