November 18, (THEWILL) – Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum, Ado Doguwa, has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will not hastily pass the Tax Reform Bills recently submitted by President Bola Tinubu.
Doguwa, in a statement issued in Kano on Monday, said the Assembly would exercise caution to ensure the proposed laws align with the country’s economic realities.
“We will certainly not rush the passage of these bills to avoid making hasty legislations or laws that would, in the end, fail to address our practical economic realities as a nation,” Doguwa stated.
The lawmaker, who also serves as Leader of the Northern Regional Caucus of the House of Representatives, commended the House leadership for organising interactive sessions to clarify the content and intent of the proposed reforms.
“We must commend the wisdom of the House leadership for coming up with this interactive session to further enlighten and clarify the content and intent of the proposed tax reform bills,” he said.
Doguwa added that the Assembly would continue consultations at the state and regional caucus levels to ensure broader awareness among lawmakers and stakeholders.
“Building on this good initiative, we will continue to hold further consultations at the levels of state and regional caucuses to create sufficient awareness amongst our members and other relevant stakeholders,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of the bills, the lawmaker explained that they touch on critical issues of fiscal federalism, resource sharing, and government financing.
“These proposed bills are obviously to do with fiscal federalism as it relates to the sharing of resources among federating units and key government institutions.
“ We must, therefore, study the bills diligently and consider them clause by clause, ensuring justice to the people and the bills in the overall interest of the nation,” he said.
