April 03, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has raised concerns over the increasing cases of denied boarding and deportation of Nigerian passengers on international travels, warning that such incidents are unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, disclosed that the agency had received multiple complaints about airlines selling tickets to Nigerian travelers, only to transport them partway before deporting them back home.
According to the regulator, these actions—often stemming from visa and travel restrictions—have caused undue hardship for affected passengers and dented the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
“The NCAA finds such practices completely unacceptable. It is the responsibility of airlines to inform passengers of any potential barriers to their entry before departure. Passengers should not be subjected to the ordeal of being denied entry or sent back to Nigeria after reaching transit points,” Achimugu stated.
Citing the provisions of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), the NCAA reiterated that airlines and their agents are mandated to provide passengers with accurate and up-to-date information regarding travel documentation and visa requirements before issuing tickets or allowing boarding.
The aviation authority further stressed that it would no longer tolerate such occurrences, adding that international airlines operating in Nigeria have been duly informed.
“Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in these practices will face regulatory action, including but not limited to fines, suspension of flight operations, or other necessary penalties,” the statement read.
The NCAA emphasised the need for compliance, urging airlines to uphold industry standards and safeguard the rights and welfare of Nigerian passengers.
