December 17, (THEWILL) – The North-East Development Commission has commenced a three-day training workshop for journalists and civil society organisations on Non-Kinetic Approaches to insurgency and terrorism across the North-East region and the nation in general.
Speaking at the opening session in Maiduguri, NEDC Managing Director Muhammad Alkali explained the commission’s dedication to addressing the root causes of conflict through its North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan.
Alkali said that the workshop is meant to equip participants with the skills needed to foster peacebuilding and change the negative narratives to drive development in the conflict-affected region
He called for stronger collaboration between the media, CSOs, and the NEDC to sustain ongoing rebuilding efforts and promote harmonious coexistence.
In his remarks, NEDC’s Head of Corporate Services, Abba Musa, commended journalists and CSOs for their contributions to stabilising the region. Represented by Ms Naomi Abwaku, he described the workshop as a significant initiative to enhance their capacity and amplify the impact of their work.
On his part, Ahmed Shehu, Chairperson of the North-East Civil Society Organisations, and Aminu Mallum of the Network of Adamawa NGOs underscored the workshop’s role in strengthening non-violent responses to insurgency and fostering sustainable development.
He commended the NEDC for their foresight and prioritising peacebuilding among the development stride toward the restoration of peace in the subregion
The training featured notable speakers, including Prof Umar Pate, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere; Dr Nathaniel Danjibo of the University of Ibadan; and Prof Muazu Abubakar of the University of Maiduguri.
