Internet subscriptions

May 05, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s telecommunications industry is entering a new phase of competition as the race for new subscribers gradually gives way to a deeper battle for data dominance, network capacity and service quality.

With active subscriptions reaching 185.5 million as of March 2026 and teledensity standing at 85.67 percent, the mobile market is approaching saturation. Rather than easing competition, however, the near-mature market is pushing operators to rethink growth strategies and invest heavily in network infrastructure to capture rising data demand.

Industry leader, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, continues to dominate the sector with 95.7 million active subscriptions, representing 51.62 percent of the market. According to industry data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission, the company added 2.6 million new users in the first quarter of 2026.

Airtel Nigeria remains the second-largest operator, closing March with 63.6 million subscriptions and a 34.3 percent market share. The telco recorded the largest quarterly growth, adding 2.7 million new connections, largely driven by continued network expansion.

In contrast, Globacom Limited remains a distant third with 22.6 million subscribers, following the loss of millions of lines during the 2024 NIN-SIM linkage exercise. The operator added just 414,283 new subscriptions during the quarter.

Meanwhile, T2 Telecom, formerly 9mobile, continues to struggle for scale. Despite a roaming agreement with MTN and ongoing network rebuilding, the company recorded only 3.4 million active subscriptions after gaining about 250,000 users in three months.

Industry analysts say the competitive focus is shifting from subscriber numbers to network strength as internet usage surges. Data consumption exceeded 1.42 million terabytes in March, reflecting growing reliance on digital services.

“Network capacity, not subscriber numbers, now determines who wins”, said telecom analyst, Adewale Adeoye, noting that consumers are increasingly willing to switch providers for faster and more reliable connectivity.

To stay ahead, operators are accelerating 4G expansion, fibre deployment and 5G readiness, signalling that the next phase of Nigeria’s telecom competition will be defined less by subscriber growth and more by the ability to deliver faster, more reliable data services.
