September 28, (THEWILL) — Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency may resume their suspended industrial action within two weeks if the Federal Government fails to address their grievances.
The NiMet Unions Joint Committee, made up of the agency’s branches of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, the National Union of Air Transport Employees, and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, has formally asked its national secretariat to reactivate the strike.
The request followed a resolution passed at the committee’s meeting of September 8, 2025. In a statement titled “Urgent Intervention on NiMet Lingering Issues” and dated September 15, 2025, the unions listed demands including the immediate payment of outstanding arrears from the nine-month 2019 minimum wage implementation, as well as payment for 30 staff members who were omitted from the initial disbursement.
The statement, jointly signed by Comrade Ibrahim Hisham (AUPCTRE), Comrade Akagi Nyaluaziba (NUATE), and Comrade Okerafor Romeo (ANAP), stressed that workers had grown frustrated with the government’s delays.
The unions also expressed displeasure over the non-adoption of the Salary Relativity framework, describing it as crucial for fair remuneration.
They further condemned what they called a persistent disregard for the official circular on the appointment and contract engagement of special assistants, personal assistants, and other contract staff in the agency.
NiMet workers had earlier suspended their strike in May to give the government time to respond to their concerns.
The unions warned, however, that patience is running out and that failure to meet their demands would trigger a resumption of the industrial action.
