May 16, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Rivers State Command, has advocated for foreign owned companies to evolve policies on technology transfer and human capacity development on the job, to enable successful transfer of skills,technology, as envisaged and enshrined in the Expatriate Quota Grants.
According to the NIS, many qualified Nigerians are deprived of such opportunities to grow in their chosen career and take over after a period of understudy as stipulated.
The Comptroller of Immigration Service, Rivers State Command, James Sunday PCC, while speaking on the proposed stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to advocate for Human Capacity Development for qualified Nigerians in the private sector of the economy, employee of Companies, Organisations for technology transfer, based on government provision in the Expatriate Quota Grants to Companies,pointed out that the provision of the law stipulated that expatriates who are on quota to allow Nigerian understudies undergo human capacity development on the job to enable successful transfer of skills and technology.
According to him, “In our quest for engaging with companies in Rivers State, it is important they understand the provision and enforce the same, for the betterment of the nation, avert frustration and to avoid brain drain as a result of lack of job satisfaction and lack of career advancement at home.”
He said that qualified Nigerians should enjoy the fruit of their labour, and not be exploited, frustrated and compelled to leave the country in the name of looking for greener pastures, “it is out of place for a qualified Nigerian to be looking outside the shore of the country for a job that is satisfactory when Non-Nigerians takes flight to take up employments in Nigerian Companies, Industries and Organisations.
“Afterall, the bulk work and even the core jobs are assigned the Nigerians only to be supervised by an expatriate, if only the Expatriate is better informed, then there should be transfer of skills and technology after a period of mentorship or understudy and proper process put in place for career advancement for take over, which is the primary reason for the understudy program clause in the Expatriate Quota Grants approved by the Ministry of Interior and enforced by the Nigeria Immigration Service.”
He noted that the Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service is encouraging functional industries, companies and organisations in the private sector of the economy and by extension public sector to collaborate with the Nigeria Immigration Service to give qualified Nigerians sense of worth and dignity for their labour, which is the hallmark for excellent academic performance and employability,we must fight brain drain especially for qualified Nigerians that are employable to encourage sound academic pursuit and learning instead of mere certification.
