August 03, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its nationwide mass protest, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu and the national assembly.
The decision followed a resolution of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Congress on Thursday.
Organised labour, under the umbrella of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the NLC, on Wednesday, commenced its planned protests against the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the removal of subsidy on petrol and delayed implementation of palliatives on the policy.
THEWILL reports that the protest, held across the federation including the Federal Capital Territory, prompted an emergency meeting between the President and the labour leaders.
His Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, said the Unions agreed to further constructive engagement with the government to resolve all outstanding issues as they affect the workers and Nigerians in general.
President Tinubu also gave his commitment to the Labour leaders that the Port Harcourt refineries will start production by December 2023, after the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between NNPCL and Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
However, confirming the suspension of the protest on Thursday, National Treasurer of the NLC, Hakeem Ambali, said, “Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesternight.”
