November 07, (THEWILL) – The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have summoned an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
National Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, made this known on Tuesday afternoon.
Etim said the meeting will review the modalities of the planned strike following the brutalisation of the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero.
The NEC meeting will also review the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government and the Organised Labour on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on petrol.
“We will be holding an extraordinary NEC meeting any moment from now. The modalities include the injustice meted upon comrade Ajaero, the planned strike and the MOU signed with the Federal Government. More details will be revealed after the meeting,” he said.
Organised labour had threatened a nationwide industrial action from Wednesday, November 8, to protest the assault on Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The Unions, in a joint briefing with journalists in Abuja on Friday, gave implementation of a six-point demand, including the redeployment of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, to avert the strike.
Recall that suspected agents of the state and security operatives had descended on Ajaero alongside other Labour leaders, smashing their vehicles, inflicting injuries on them and dispossessing handsets, money, and ATM cards among other valuables from the Labour leaders and others who had gathered at the NLC State secretariat to begin a scheduled protest over pending labour issues.
The NLC President and other national leaders of NLC and TUC were at the state Secretariat in Owerri to protest, among other grievances, the backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
