GOVERNOR KASHIM SHETTIMA OF BORNO STATE
SAN FRANCISCO, September 25, (THEWILL) – Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, on Wednesday, offered some recipes that would ensure that peace returns to the troubled North-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
The governor, who offered the recipes while speaking at a North-east Peace Summit organised by the Youth Federation for World Peace in Maiduguri,insisted that much was being expected from the Federal Government by the people of the region in form of palliative and control of the crisis after about four years of trauma in the hands of the insurgents.
Shettima, who lamented that the initial posture of the Federal Government to the insecurity in Borno was discouraging and soul wrecking, said the Federal Government which initially treated the crisis as Borno affair later treated it as a national threat and gave some measured level of support.
The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Hon. Inuwa Kubo, however disclosed that his administration had spent “huge amount of its scarce resource on security and assistance to victims of Boko Haram insurgency.”
He nonetheless stressed the need for the Federal Government to assist and partner with the state government in sustaining emerging peace, especially in Maiduguri, the state capital.
He also expressed gratitude to the organisers of the peace summit and their partners for ensuring a successful hosting of the summit.
Shettima particularly appreciated the British Council for its presence despite “scaring media report on Borno in the media.”
In his remarks at the occasion, Project Manager of the British Council, Kano office, Dr. Ryan Grist charged the media to help the region build and sustain peace. “There are obviously something positive about Borno,” he declared as he urged the media to highlight such positive things to ensure that peace returns fully to the state..
