February 10, (THEWILL) — As part of its efforts to drive toward global academic engagement, the Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) has signed an international Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lahore, Pakistan.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, disclosed this during a press conference on Tuesday. He said the agreement was the first of its kind since the establishment of the institution.
He also described the agreement as a milestone in the university’s commitment to internationalisation, research development, and capacity building.
Bunza said the partnership aligns with the vision of the Founder and Pro-Chancellor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, to strengthen higher education through cross-border collaboration and position the university within the global academic community.
According to him, the MoU provides a structured framework for cooperation in teaching, research, training, and scholarly exchange, aimed at enhancing institutional capacity and expanding opportunities for both students and faculty.
He explained that the agreement covers academic exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, curriculum development, and professional training.
“It also allows for joint participation in seminars, conferences, workshops, and other scholarly activities to promote best practices in higher education delivery”, Bunza notes.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the partnership opens doors for staff and student mobility, collaborative academic development, and the sharing of institutional expertise initiatives expected to boost research output and promote intercultural understanding.
Bunza said the agreement reflected a practical commitment to building sustainable academic bridges capable of delivering measurable gains in research productivity, capacity development, and educational quality.
He noted that the collaboration is anchored on the National Universities Commission (NUC) framework on Transnational Education, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, quality assurance requirements, and institutional capacity thresholds governing cross-border partnerships.
Bunza said adherence to regulatory provisions reinforces transparency and academic integrity while supporting NWUS’s goal of responsibly internationalising its programmes in line with national policy on transnational higher education.
He expressed appreciation to the leadership of the University of Lahore for their cooperation and expressed confidence that the partnership would yield mutual benefits for both institutions, their students, and the wider society.
