SAN FRANCISCO, October 02, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that starting from Friday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, it will begin the detonation of bombs recovered from the Boko Haram insurgents during the recently concluded military operation, tagged Operation BOYONA in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.
Operation BOYONA, it would be recalled, was inaugurated shortly after President Goodluck Jonathan declared the state of emergency on May 13 to flush out the insurgents from the three North-eastern States .
The special operation was however disbanded after three months and was replaced with the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army with headquarters in Maiduguri.
Spokesman of the 7 Division of Nigerian Army in Borno State, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, who disclosed this, said the Nigerian Army would destroy large quantities of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) recovered during Operation BOYONA as from Friday at Chabbal, a community on the outskirts of Maiduguri, along the Maiduguri-Gubio road .
He therefore advised residents of the area, including farmers and herdsmen to remain indoors during the exercise.
According to Musa, the detonation exercise of the IEDs is to prevent them from exploding and destroying lives and property in the state.
“In view of the exercise, the military division wishes to inform members of general public, particularly herdsmen; and those people living and farming around the general areas; as well as motorists; not to panic on the massive movements of troops and their vehicles; and sounds of explosives on Friday,” he said.
On the Benishiekh ambush and killings, Musa said “Following the recent strikes on this road and Benishiekh, by the suspected Boko Haram terrorists, the 7 Division of Nigerian Army is seriously concerned and is acting with the view to containing this ugly trend, not only on the affected road, but other roads; as well as in its other areas of responsibility.”
According to him,“The whole effort is to destroy terrorism and ensure the protection of people’s life and property. Members of the public are requested to continue to remain resilient and security conscious at all times, as the 7 Military Division is poised to eradicating this madness.”
