December 31, (THEWILL) – As Nigerians celebrate the 2024 Christmas season in peace and tranquility—contrasting sharply with the chaos of past years—road travelers nationwide have praised the Federal Road Safety Corps for its innovative approach under the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed.
The enhanced safety measures on the nation’s highways are the result of rigorous planning and execution.
Since the commencement of the FRSC’s special end-of-year operation on December 15, 2024, and the deployment of monitors from its National Headquarters on December 20, road users have reported a noticeable reduction in accidents and gridlocks.
Corps Marshal Mohammed’s commitment to operational transformation was evident from his first address to FRSC staff following his appointment.
Declaring his agenda as one of “rejuvenated operations,” Mohammed emphasized the need for innovative traffic management strategies to tackle Nigeria’s perennial yuletide road challenges.
Known for his dynamic leadership style and a track record of excellence, Mohammed’s hands-on approach has been pivotal.
Prior to assuming his current role, he served as Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone 7, Abuja, where he honed his expertise in field operations.
This year’s special patrol has served as a platform for him to lead by example, personally overseeing traffic operations across key regions.
On December 22, 2024, barely a day after deploying monitoring teams nationwide, the Corps Marshal embarked on a monitoring tour starting in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Known as the gateway between the North and South, Lokoja welcomed Mohammed and his team with enthusiasm as they distributed road safety flyers and sensitized road users.
In Ondo State, Mohammed continued his advocacy efforts, visiting traditional ruler Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III in Owo and addressing FRSC personnel in Akure. He urged officers to remain vigilant, promising rewards for exemplary performance and accountability for indolence.
The notorious traffic congestion at the Niger Bridge, which links Anambra and Delta states, received special attention. Mohammed met with the Asagba of Asaba, HRM (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, to solicit traditional institutions’ support in ensuring seamless traffic flow.
At the bridge, where traffic was already building, the Corps Marshal’s presence inspired confidence.
He engaged directly with road users, distributed safety materials, and commended marshals for their dedication to maintaining order during the festive rush.
The FRSC’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. A road user, identified as Doc Bee, captured the sentiments of many when he tweeted, “When we criticize, we must also appraise. Today, I drove from Bauchi to Yola and was impressed by the FRSC’s organization. Officers were directing traffic at key points, and ambulance services were visible throughout the route. It’s commendable. Well done. Merry Christmas.”
As the first phase of the FRSC’s special patrol concludes with Christmas celebrations and the second phase ensures the safe return of travelers, Mohammed has urged staff to remain vigilant and committed.
His Christmas message emphasised sacrifice, vigilance, and collective responsibility to make Nigeria’s roads safer during the yuletide and beyond.
