July 05, (THEWILL) – Panic on Wednesday, gripped the campus of the State Medical University, along the Igbi road area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital, following an early morning fire outbreak in one of its hostels.
According to sources, the fire, which started at about 6:40 am, at the Female Hostel of the university, was said to be caused by an electric spark, while a student was trying to iron her clothes.
Newsmen gathered that the alarm raised on the fire outbreak caused panic, with scores of students scampering for safety, while others were moving valuables from the hostel.
Personnel of the Federal and Bayelsa State Fire Services, reportedly responded to the emergency call promptly. They succeeded in stopping the fire from spreading to other rooms in the block.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu and the Chief Security Officer, Prince Diete-Spiff, appreciated the officials of the two Fire Services for the prompt response to the emergency.
No life was lost and physical injury suffered, except for personal belongings of members of the affected room destroyed by fire, which include documents and clothes, among other items.
