SAN FRANCISCO, September 10, (THEWILL) – President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Tuesday night met with four of the seven state governors (G7) that are behind the “New PDP”, the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that emerged after some aggrieved governors and their supporters stormed out of the special national convention of the party at the Eagle Square, Abuja, about two weeks ago.
The reconciliatory meeting which started just a few minutes after 9.pm was held at the official residence of the President, inside the Presidential Villa.
Journalists were not allowed near the venue thus making it very difficult to identify all the parties at the peace meeting.
However, despite the challenge, a source familiar with the development told state house correspondents that the rebellious state governors in attendance were Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).
Three other renegade governors – Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State), Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano) and Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara State) did not attend Tuesday night’s meeting.
Also at the meeting were Governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe),
both supporters of President Jonathan and the Bamanga Tukur led faction of the party.
Recall that THEWILL had earlier reported a Tuesday afternoon peace meeting between the president, former heads of state, General Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida, as well as Ahmadu Ali, a former military officer and ex chairman of the PDP.
Before then, the President had met with Tukur as well as Governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom State), Gabriel Suswam (Benue State) and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta State), all supporters of the Tukur faction.
