May 05, (THEWILL) – The Court of Appeal, Abuja, on Friday, upheld the November 8, 2021 judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which convicted the former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, for money laundering.
Justice Okon Abang had sentenced Maina to 8 years imprisonment for laundering offences involving N2 billion in pension fund after convicting him and his company, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd, on all the 12 counts filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Dissatisfied with the ruling, Maina had approached the appellate court, seeking to quash his conviction.
However, a three-member panel of the court, in a judgement on Friday, unanimously affirmed his earlier conviction.
Justice Elfreda Williams-Daudu, in the lead judgement, also affirmed the various interlocutory rulings delivered in the course of the trial at the Federal High Court, which Maina appealed against.
Justice Williams-Daudu, who resolved the two issues, identified for determination, against Maina, held that he was not denied fair hearing by the trial court and that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
