March 03, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the officer caught in a viral video, allegedly carrying a plate of food for the former Nigeria’s ambassador to the Republic of Netherlands, Dr Nimota Nihinlola Akanbi.
However, the former envoy had debunked the reports, stating that the officer was carrying his own food at a community engagement in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Nonetheless, the Acting Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the officer, who has been identified, will be questioned in Abuja, adding that “such an act is a disgrace to the Police Force.”
Adejobi said, “He (the policeman) has been identified. He is coming to Abuja to meet us.
“We’ll ask questions from him and take necessary action. We need to discourage such a thing because it is embarrassing the image of the Force and we can’t continue to experience that kind of thing because it is highly unprofessional.”
Adejobi, who did not reveal the name of the officer, warned police operatives to stop running errands or performing jobs that are not related to their duty of protecting prominent individuals from security threats.
Over the years, successive Inspector-General of Police had ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to ‘Very Important Persons’ (VIPs), but the directive had only existed on paper as policemen have been seen carrying bags of VIPs, opening the doors of their cars with matching salutes.
Just last week, a policeman, Sergeant Adeleke Ogunsola, died after being hit by an unnamed driver of a former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel.
The incident happened at Daniel’s Asoludero residence at Sagamu in Ogun, even as cops expressed sadness that Ogunsola, an orderly, was turned into a gatekeeper at the house.
