March 10, (THEWILL) – The relative peace that Bayelsa state has been reputed to be enjoying has been jolted, as palpable tension in Akenfa community, a suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, over the continued rejection of the old N500 and N1000 notes by traders and transporters.
Our correspondent gathered that the protesters carried various placards, calling on the Federal Government and the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, to intervene, in order to ameliorate the suffering of the people.
As at the time of filing this report, the major roads leading to the state capital have been blocked by the protesters, making commuters to trek long distances.
The Bayelsa state government is yet to intervene, neither has it issued a statement to assuage or pacify the protesters.
Recall the Supreme Court, a fortnight ago, ruled that the N500 and N1000 notes be accepted as legal tenders along with N200 as ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari in a broadcast.
The naira redesign policy of the Federal government has caused untold hardships to Nigerians, as every sector of the economy has been put in jeopardy.
