February 25, (THEWILL) — The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has entered into a landmark ₦100 billion financing agreement with Lotus Bank to accelerate renewable energy deployment across Nigeria.
The facility, aims to expand access to clean and reliable electricity, particularly in underserved and off-grid communities, as part of ongoing efforts to bridge the country’s energy access gap.
Under the agreement, the funding will support the development and expansion of renewable energy projects, including solar mini-grids, standalone solar home systems, and other distributed energy solutions. The initiative is expected to boost electrification in rural communities, power small businesses, and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level.
Officials said the partnership aligns with national objectives to promote sustainable energy solutions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and enhance energy security. By leveraging Lotus Bank’s non-interest financing model, the collaboration is also designed to attract ethical and impact-driven investments into the renewable energy sector.
The REA noted that the ₦100 billion facility would provide long-term, affordable financing to renewable energy developers and service providers, enabling them to scale operations and reach more communities. The agency emphasised that access to financing remains one of the key barriers to expanding renewable energy infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step toward achieving universal electricity access and advancing Nigeria’s clean energy transition agenda.
The partnership underscores growing collaboration between public institutions and financial organisations in mobilising capital for sustainable development and climate-resilient infrastructure.
