June 28 (THEWILL) — Athletes of SAMKAY Athletics Club impressed, creating new Personal Bests at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games Trials, held at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos.
A few of the athletes were fielded to represent Bayelsa State at the trials.
Leading the pack with an outstanding race is Samson Teibowei, who narrowly missed the 800 meters title, coming second with a new personal best of 1:54:21 seconds.
The young Tebowei had earlier posted a time of 1:54.60 in the heat, shaving off two seconds from his previous time of 1:56.04 achieved at the MTN CHAMPS last April in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In the 400m final event, Faith Ezechukwu came third with a new personal best of 53.12 secs, her third personal best in three days.
Similarly, in sprint, Perfect Faye ruffled shoulder with the big boys, posting a time of 10.71 seconds, a PB in the 100m event and 21:31 seconds in the 200m to place 4th at the trials.
In the female event, Gift Allison ran a time of 12:02 in the 100m and 25:04 in the 200m, while Perezide Sigah ran a season-best time of 11.65 in the 100m.
Godgift Bariweni, who was making an appearance on the big stage for the first time, had a time of 58:13 sec in the 400hurdles for men, while Tokoni Itu posted a time of 11:09sec, a personal best over the 100m race for men.
In the Long jump event, Mekioniso Messiah leapt 6.79 metres, not enough to propel him to the final, as Ebikiemo Ikadoi jumped 6.65 metres.
The founder and Chairman of SAMKAY Athletics Club, Dr Kola Oredipe, who described their performance as commendable, noted that the investment in the athletes is yielding results.
