BEVERLY HILLS, October 19, (THEWILL) – The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly on Wednesday announced its decision to probe the October 7/8 raid on the homes of some judges and their subsequent arrests by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.
In furtherance of investigation into the matter, the judges are to appear before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to provide answers to certain questions from the Senate.
The Chairman of the committee, Senator David Umaru, made the probe known during the plenary, stating that the panel would work on the report by the National Judicial Council, NJC, on the issue.
The DSS had invaded the homes of some judges across the country between the late hours of October 7 and early hours of October 8, 2016. Those arrested include: Justice John Okoro and Justice Sylvester Nguta of the Supreme Court; Justice Namdi Dimgba and Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja; Kabiru Auta, FHC, Kano; Muazu Pindiga, FHC, Gombe; and a former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Innocent Umezulike.
Before now, the House of Representatives had constituted an ad hoc committee to look into the invasion carried out on the residence of the judges by operatives of the secret police. The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara stated that the Lower Chamber would first have to investigate the matter before arriving at a conclusion.
