January 21, (THEWILL) – Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, killed at least seven people, mostly traders and injured 11 at Ngalda cattle and main market in Fika Local Government area of Yobe state.
The armed men stormed the weekly market in Ngalda, the headquarters of Fika LG around 6pm, shooting sporadically, attacking and robbing shops.
Dauda Yakubu Damazai, one of the media aides to the Council Chairman of Fika LG, said seven traders in both the main market and cattle market have lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.
‘‘Yesterday evening (Monday), the Ngalda cattle and Main market was attacked by unknown gunmen, seven innocent people were killed by the attackers.
‘‘At least eleven people sustained injuries with fractures, they were rushed to the Fika General Hospital for medical treatment. Thank God three of the bandits were killed by the security agencies and vigilantes.’’
Confirming the incident, Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, said the attack was launched by a group of six armed robbers, led by Datti Alhaji Dadji of Ngalda Town.
He said the incident resulted in seven fatalities and eleven injuries. The robbers made off with approximately sixteen million five hundred thousand Naira (N16,500,000).
‘‘In response, the people of Ngalda Town mobilised and killed three of the robbers, while three others escaped with injuries”, he added.
Meanwhile, Yobe state government has dispatched a high powered delegation to commiserate with the families and victims of the attack.
Governor Buni commiserated with the families of the deceased and sympathised with those who sustained injuries, as well as the entire Ngalda community.
The Governor also directed security agencies to identify and block all loose ends to check the excesses of hoodlums in the area and across the state.
“You should do a thorough investigation, check the loopholes to guard against future occurrence, just as you don’t spare those involved”, the Governor directed.
