March 20, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sheriff Oborevwori, as the winner of Saturday, March 18 gubernatorial election in Delta State.
Declaring the results on Monday, INEC collation officer in the state, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill of the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, said Oborevwori polled a total of 360,234 votes to beat his main rival, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who scored 240,229 votes.
Oborevwori won in 21 Local Government Areas of Delta state, while Omo-Agege won in 4.
Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), scored 11,021 votes, while Ken Pela of the Labour Party (LP), polled 48,047 votes.
Born to the family of Chief Samuel Oborevwori of Osubi, in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Oborevwori’s political sojourn began in 1996 when he was elected as a Councilor in the old Okpe Local Government Area (which then included Udu and Uvwie LGAs).
Between 2003 and 2006, Oborevwori was appointed Special Assistant on Youth Mobilisation in 2003, by Chief James Ibori.
Governor Ibori’s successor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, appointed Oborevwori as Special Adviser on Land Security from 2007 to 2010.
In the heat of the Niger Delta crisis of 2008/2009, Oborevwori became the Delta State Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme and by doing so, contributed to the enhancement of national security and stability. He later served as Senior Special Assistant on Security to Governor Uduaghan from 2012 to 2015.
His crossover from the executive to the legislature came in 2015 when he was elected to represent the Okpe Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly.
Oborevwori was elected as Speaker of the Sixth Assembly in 2017, a post to which he was re-elected in 2019, thus making history as the first Deltan to serve as Speaker from one Assembly to another Assembly.
