August 6, (THEWILL) — Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced his first official leave since assuming office more than three years ago, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The two-week leave, which took effect on Thursday, August 6, 2026, is expected to provide the Vice President with an opportunity for strategic policy review, study, reflection and intellectual renewal as the Federal Government enters another critical phase of implementing its Renewed Hope Agenda.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, said the leave is intended to enable Shettima to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues and strengthen his capacity for continued service.
According to Nkwocha, the exercise forms part of efforts to ensure sustained effectiveness in governance as the administration pushes ahead with reforms aimed at stimulating economic growth, improving national security and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.
Since taking office on May 29, 2023, Shettima has remained one of the administration’s principal coordinators of government policy, overseeing and supervising strategic initiatives across multiple sectors.
His responsibilities have covered economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation, regional cooperation and other priority areas central to the Tinubu administration’s development agenda.
The Vice President has also consistently chaired meetings of the National Economic Council (NEC), the constitutional body that brings together the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior public officials to deliberate on policies affecting the nation’s economy and citizens’ welfare.
In addition to his domestic responsibilities, Shettima has represented President Tinubu at several high-profile regional and international engagements, where he has advanced Nigeria’s positions on investment, trade, economic integration, peace and security, climate action and sustainable development.
The Presidency said his commitment to duty, loyalty and public service has remained unwavering throughout his time in office.
It added that the Vice President would resume his official responsibilities after the two-week leave with renewed energy and greater focus on supporting the President in delivering the administration’s policy objectives.
