December 17, (THEWILL) — Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, on Wednesday presented a proposed ₦758.7 billion 2026 budget to the State House of Assembly, with a strong emphasis on capital development, security and social services.
Presenting the budget during plenary, the governor said the proposal allocates 72 per cent to capital expenditure and 28 per cent to recurrent spending.
Aliyu explained that the 2026 fiscal plan targets critical sectors aimed at improving citizens’ welfare and accelerating development across the state.
According to him, the health sector received the highest allocation of ₦122.7 billion, followed by education with ₦115.9 billion, reflecting the administration’s commitment to human capital development.
Security was also prioritised, with ₦45.2 billion earmarked to support security operations and address prevailing challenges in the state.
The governor assured that the budget would adequately fund programmes designed to improve living conditions, strengthen poverty reduction initiatives and sustain socio-economic growth.
Reviewing the performance of the 2025 budget, Aliyu commended the House of Assembly for its support, which he said contributed significantly to the achievements recorded by his administration.
He noted that the government had made notable progress in implementing its nine-point SMART Agenda, particularly in infrastructure development.
“We have embarked on the construction of over 100 roads across the state, with several completed and others at advanced stages,” the governor said.
He added that youth empowerment, infrastructure development, provision of social amenities, security, agriculture and job creation remain key pillars of his administration’s achievements.
Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the legislature, describing the cordial relationship as a defining feature of his government.
He also appreciated the people of Sokoto State for their continued prayers and support, pledging to remain committed to inclusive governance and sustainable development.
Responding, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Tukur Bala, commended the governor for the comprehensive presentation and assured that lawmakers would give the budget proposal due consideration to ensure its timely passage
