July 26, (THEWILL) – The Convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested at the Abuja Federal High Court.
Sowore was arrested by security agents at the court premises during a Facebook Live session on Monday morning.
Security operatives also arrested members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who had gathered close to the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.
The IPOB members had tried to gain access into the premises of the court where their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony.
After failed attempts to enter the court premises, the IPOB members converged by the side of the road chanting solidarity songs and addressing journalists.
A video from the scene on social media showed a police officer asking them to leave the side of the road where they had converged.
When they proved adamant, the officer tried to arrest one of them as he brought out his gun and threatened to shoot while chasing him.
Another video from the scene showed some arrested IPOB members inside police vans beside the court which was heavily guarded by security operatives.
THEWILL had earlier reported that there is tight security around the court as the trial of Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Service ( Dss) resumed today.
Kanu, who was earlier extradited into Nigeria from a foreign country, is facing terrorism-related charges before Justice Binta Nyako.
Journalists at the entrance to the court are barred by DSS officers from entering the court on the ground that they were not accredited to cover the trial.
Some media organisations including The Guardian, Vanguard, Daily Trust, Tribune, Daily Sun, Punch, The Cable, and Daily Times and Sahara Reporters, have been reportedly barred from covering the trial.
The media organisations the DSS accredited are Daily Post, ThisDay, Premium Times, The Nation, Daily Independent, The Herald, National Television Authority, Television Continental, African Independent Television and Channels Television.
The DSS did not give reasons for picking 10 media houses while barring others from covering the trial.
