March 26, (THEWILL) – No fewer than 26 people, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man, were injured at the ongoing National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at Eagles Square, Abuja, following a stampede.
Delegates had besieged the venue, waiting for clearance when suddenly people broke free from the security, who were forced to retreat.
The security agents drawn from men of the Department of State Security (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army and the civil defence regrouped and chased after the crowd with police dogs.
As supporters of the different presidential aspirants besieged the gate waiting for clearance, the crowd became uncontrollable. As they wrestled to gain entry, people started falling over one another, while the policemen used teargas to control the crowd.
Meanwhile, supporters of the different presidential aspirants, dressed in different attires, are displaying pictures and banners of their aspirants, while dancing in a carnival-like manner.
Some of the banners displayed ‘Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for President’, ‘Gov David Umahi for President’ and ‘Rotimi Amaechi for President.’
Some of the supporters said they were in Abuja to showcase their aspirants.
Musliu Ajani, a member of the Tinubu Supporters Group, said they decided to draw support for Tinubu on their own.
“We decided to come together to raise funds and campaign for Tinubu, because he is the best aspirant to take over from Buhari in 2023. We believe that he has all it takes for the job”, he said.
