May 06, (THEWILL) – Huge crowds are gathering as millions all over the world including world leaders are watching to see the historic coronation of King Charles III.
Parts of Central London have been gridlocked for several days, with barriers lining the route that King Charles and Queen Camilla will take in procession from Buckingham Palace, the British monarchy’s official London residence, to Westminster Abbey, the nation’s coronation church since 1066.
British police say 11,000 officers are on duty throughout the day.
The event in Westminster Abbey is one Britons have not witnessed for 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II was the last British monarch to be crowned.
In a coronation ceremony that dates back 1,000 years, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will place a jewel-encrusted gold crown on Charles III’s head. Then, his son, Prince William, will kneel before the king and pledge his loyalty. However, these will come after Charles is anointed with holy oil consecrated in Jerusalem.
Born November 14, 1948, Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who died April 9, 2021.
Known as Prince Charles of Wales, he became King the moment his mother died in September 2022, meaning he immediately became Head of State for the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a dozen other countries.
He is also the Titular Head of the Church of England and Head of the Military and the Judiciary, and he carries a host of other royal titles and duties.
