December 27, (THEWILL) – Thugs on Monday attacked and vandalised the venue of the state congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara.
The programme, initially slated for the Zaitun oil mill, behind State Pilgrim Board, has been moved to the Command Guest House in Gusau, following the incident.
THEWILL gathered that the thugs invaded the venue in the early hours of Monday and destroyed the voting materials, nomination forms, two vehicles belonging to party members, chairs and set canopies ablaze.
A member of the PDP, Musa Garba said, “We had scheduled our state congress to hold today (Monday) to enable us to elect the new state executive officers to run the affairs of the party in Zamfara state.
“We have notified all the relevant security agencies in the state for smooth conduct of the exercise but to our dismay, these thugs came and started throwing stones on our members.
“They have succeeded in destroying many of our vehicles, chairs and the election materials.
“They also attempted to burn down our secretariat, opposite the Zamfara state Ministry of Finance, if not for the quick response of the security agents.”
Garba wondered why anybody would send political thugs to stop the PDP congress in the state, calling on security agents to investigate the issue and punish those involved in the act.
The Personal Secretary to Deputy Governor of Zamfara state, Umar Aminu said the party will not be intimidated by the incident, noting that the congress will still go ahead as scheduled.
It is not certain which political party is responsible for the attack on the PDP facility in the north-western state.
Despite the attack, the Deputy Governor of Zamfara state, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, and the caretaker chairman of the party, Ambassador Bala Mande, were on ground at the new venue of the congress.
The congress has drawn 1,089 delegates and is meant to produce key PDP officials that will pilot the affairs of the party in the state.
