May 29, (THEWILL) – Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in as the President of Nigeria on Tuesday, May 29, 2023.
His presidency represents an ascendancy of a new bloc within the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN
THEWILL recalled that in 2014 various political parties collapsed their structures to form a mega Party, called the All Progressives Congress, APC .
The major parties in the alliance were the Congress of Progressive Changes, CPC led by General Muhammadu Buhari; the All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP led by Dr Ogbonaya Onu, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN led by Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; factions of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which tagged itself , newPDP.
The name ‘ APC’ was coined from the names of the major parties in the alliance that gave birth to it, namely the ACN, CPC and the ANPP.
The Buhari eight years two terms’ tenure is seen by watchers of political developments in the country as well as political analysts as the dominance of the CPC blocs within the APC in governance .
It was noted during the Buhari’s eight years rule that the then president favoured members of the CPC bloc in term of juicy appointments such as ministers in key ministries and Heads of various federal boards and parastatals.
It was also noted that most members of other blocs in the APC especially the newPDP complained openly through one of their leaders, Alhaji Karawu Baraje of being given little positions in governance during Buhari’s first time.
This led most of the new PDP bloc returning to the PDP, during Buhari’s second term.
Members of other blocs grumbled as they were not favoured adequately in the political arrangements that lasted eight years.
For instance, Onu that led the ANPP was given a Ministerial appointment, Minister of Science and Technology which he willingly relinquished to contest the APC Presidential primary.
The coming in of Tinubu from the ACN bloc of APC will give former chieftains of the party like Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Olusegun Osoba among others some prominence in the present government.
