March 20, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s investment drive gained momentum as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom attracted $1.51 billion in deals, including a major financing package targeted at revitalising the country’s critical trade infrastructure.
Central to the agreements is a £746 million ($990 million) export finance facility secured by the Tinubu-led government to fund the redevelopment of two of Nigeria’s key trading hubs the Lagos Port and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.
The project is expected to enhance port efficiency, improve cargo handling capacity, and support trade facilitation.
The financing forms part of broader efforts by the administration to translate ongoing economic reforms into inclusive growth and improved productivity, particularly by strengthening logistics and supply chain infrastructure.
For the United Kingdom, the deal also carries significant domestic economic benefits.
The British government disclosed that the port redevelopment will generate about £236 million in supplier contracts for UK firms, including a £70 million contract for British Steel, providing a timely boost as London advances strategies to support its steel industry.
Analysts say the dual impact of the agreement underscores a mutually beneficial partnership enabling Nigeria to upgrade critical infrastructure while supporting industrial activity in the UK.
Beyond infrastructure, the broader $1.51 billion investment commitments signal renewed investor confidence in Nigeria’s reform trajectory, particularly efforts to stabilise the macroeconomic environment and attract long-term capital.
However, experts note that the real impact will depend on the execution and timely deployment of funds, as Nigeria seeks to convert commitments into tangible economic gains and improved trade competitiveness.
