June 1 (THEWILL) — United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has reinforced its commitment to education, innovation, and youth development with the commissioning of an Innovation Hub and Business Office at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), further deepening its longstanding partnership with one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions.

The facility, commissioned by the UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, represented by Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, is designed to serve as a bridge between academia and industry by providing students, researchers, and entrepreneurs with access to banking services, enterprise support, innovation resources, and professional networks.

The development marks another milestone in UBA’s relationship with the university, dating back to the 1960s when the bank became the first financial institution to establish a campus branch in Nigeria.

Speaking at the commissioning, Elumelu, an alumnus of UNILAG, described the project as both symbolic and strategic, noting that universities remain critical centres for innovation, leadership, and economic transformation.

He said the investment reflects UBA’s enduring belief in young people and the role higher institutions play in shaping Africa’s future, adding that empowering individuals and strengthening institutions remain central to the bank’s growth strategy across the continent.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Folasade Ogunsola, commended UBA for sustaining a relationship built on innovation and impact, highlighting Elumelu’s contributions as one of the university’s most distinguished alumni.

Beyond the new facility, the university also announced the renewal of UBA’s sponsorship of the Professorial Chair in Finance, a programme established in 1972 as Nigeria’s first finance professorial chair. UBA disclosed that it has approved an additional ₦61.67 million for the endowment fund to support research, teaching, and thought leadership in finance.

The latest initiative underscores UBA’s broader strategy of driving sustainable development through investments in education, entrepreneurship, technology, and human capital across Africa.
