April 23, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s retail lender, Unity Bank Plc, has called for increased investment in the green economy and the adoption of frontier technologies as critical levers for strengthening economic resilience and mitigating the impact of climate change across Africa.
The call was made during a webinar hosted by the bank to commemorate Earth Day, themed “The True Cost of Climate Change and Who Pays?” The virtual event, held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, convened climate experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to examine the far-reaching economic and social consequences of climate change while proposing practical, scalable solutions.
Speakers at the session emphasised the urgency of channeling capital into renewable energy, climate technology, and ecosystem financing. They noted that innovation and technology-driven approaches remain essential to unlocking sustainable growth and building climate-resilient economies across the continent.
Participants also highlighted the role of financial institutions in bridging funding gaps and supporting climate-focused enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized businesses that often face limited access to capital.
Unity Bank said its initiative reflects a broader commitment to integrating environmental considerations into its financial services and investment strategies. The lender pointed to its focus on project financing and targeted support for SMEs as part of efforts to accelerate green growth.
The bank further stressed the importance of cross-sector collaboration, noting that partnerships between governments, private sector players, and development institutions are crucial to delivering impactful and sustainable climate solutions.
