January 15, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned Ms. Chiamaka Don Ubani, the passenger involved in the recent Ibom Air flight Q1528 incident, on two counts of criminal charges.
According to the police, the charges stem from her disruptive behavior, which delayed the departure of the flight.
The first charge alleges that Ms. Ubani intentionally obstructed the closure of the aircraft door, preventing the flight from taking off.
This act, the police said, constitutes an offence under Section 436 of the Criminal Code, Cap 39, Volume 2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State.
The second charge accuses her of being a public nuisance by delaying the scheduled flight, causing inconvenience and potential damage to passengers and the public.
This is said to be a violation of Section 196(1)(f) of the Criminal Code.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Michael Achimugu, confirmed the charges.
He disclosed that Ms. Ubani was granted bail on Friday, January 10, 2025.
The case is scheduled for a hearing at the Uyo Magistrate Court on February 4, 2025.
Speaking further, Mr. Achimugu reiterated the NCAA’s commitment to ensuring safe and orderly air travel.
He urged passengers to avoid unruly behavior both at airport terminals and onboard aircraft.
“The Authority strongly advises passengers to maintain decorum and adhere to aviation regulations to ensure smooth operations and safeguard the rights of others,” Achimugu said.
The incident, which garnered widespread attention, underscores the need for stricter enforcement of aviation laws to deter disruptive behavior.
