October 13, (THEWILL) — A former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has sponsored the training of 100 constituents in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation, maintenance, and repair.
The 21-day intensive training, which commenced on Monday, at the Sokoto Energy Research Centre, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, seeks to equip participants with hands-on skills in renewable energy technologies and sustainable power solutions.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Wamakko who was represented by his Director of Administration, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar, said the initiative was part of his commitment to align with the global shift toward renewable energy while empowering young people with practical, income-generating skills.
Wamakko explained that the programme was carefully designed to complement the state government’s commitment to renewable energy development and support Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s Nine-Point Smart Agenda.
He emphasised that the training would not only enhance skills development but also promote employment, empowerment, and sustainable growth across communities.
He said the skill is one of the most desirable trainings the youths need in the 21st century to remain self-employed and contribute meaningfully to society.
“Through solar energy, we can provide potable water, cook food, and reduce carbon emissions. The world is moving away from conventional energy sources to renewable ones, and solar remains one of the most viable options, especially for our state”, he said.
The Senator expressed appreciation to the management of the Sokoto Energy Research Centre for partnering in the initiative and urged participants to take full advantage of the training.
He disclosed that each trainee would receive a transport allowance throughout the programme, and would also be provided with start-up tools and funding upon completion.
In his remarks, the Director of the Centre, Prof. Mu’azu Musa, said the training would expose participants to practical solutions aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change and advancing the use of clean energy.
According to him, “Renewable energy is now a vital component in addressing the effects of climate change caused by fossil fuel usage.”
He noted that participants will receive certificates after the training and can continue to access the Centre’s technical guidance for further learning.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Arabic Board, Alhaji Ahmed Altine, commended Senator Wamakko for his consistent commitment to human capital development, describing the gesture as a continuation of his long-standing support for community empowerment initiatives.
