August 23, (THEWILL) – Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has outlined “important” areas Nigeria must tackle “aggressively” for a greater economy.
According to the former governor of Anambra State, investment in intangible assets such as education and power are critical for economic renaissance.
“What we need to do is the two most intangible assets: security, law and order . . . provide conducive environment to attract investors, then education and power . . . the economy is driven by these intangible assets” he said at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
On the stability of the naira, Obi said the “only way” to stabilise the naira is for the Nigerian economy to “move from consumption to production.”
He said Nigeria must be able to manufacture and export to earn dollars to stabilise the Naira.
Obi said Nigeria needs urgent transition from being a highly insecure country to a secured one and from a disunited country to a united one.
He added, “Nigeria has qualified to be a failed state. We have the two or three biggest characteristics of a failed state. One is when you are no longer in charge of your territory.
“Today, we are among the top terrorised countries in the world we are among the top kidnapping countries in the world. Banditry has taken over part of the country and Nigerians are being killed.”
He called on Nigerians to elect the candidate with the capacity to rescue the nation from its current mess.
“Nigeria is in a mess. We got here simply because of the accumulative effects of bad leadership. The coming election is not about tribe or religion but about character and competence. We need a bold transition from a highly insecure state to a highly secured state”, he noted.
Obi spoke at the ongoing 62nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos, He spoke on a panel alongside with All Progressives Congress Vice-Presidential Candidate, Kashim Shettima, Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar; amongst others.
The conference with the theme ‘Bold Transitions’ began on Monday and will run until August 26.
Award-winning novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, who gave a keynote address at the event, said Nigerians are starved of heroes and young people have nobody to look up to.
