April 22, (THEWILL) – The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said the Nigerian mission in Sudan and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have put in place arrangements to evacuate Nigerian students and other Nigerian citizens stranded in Sudan.
She, however, said, “The tense situation makes it gravely risky and impossible for any flight at this point in time.” She noted that aircraft parked at the Airport in Sudan were burnt on Thursday morning, due to the crisis in the country.
Dabiri-Erewa disclosed this on Friday, in a statement signed by Gabriel Odu, the Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, at NIDCOM.
She noted that humanitarian groups are seeking ways of getting food, water and medical supplies across to the people.
The NiDCOM boss appealed to warring parties in Sudan to consider the Juba Peace Agreement enunciated by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), as a fundamental mechanism for the restoration of peace and tranquillity in the country.
“The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said, while the Nigerian Mission in Sudan and the National Emergency Management Agency have put in place arrangements to evacuate Nigerian students and other Nigerian citizens stranded in Sudan, the tense situation makes it gravely risky and impossible for any flights at this point in time, noting that aircrafts parked at the airport in the country were burnt yesterday (Thursday) morning.
“Dabiri-Erewa noted that humanitarian groups are seeking ways of getting food, water and medical supplies across to people.
“She, therefore, appealed to the fighting parties to consider the Juba Peace Agreement enunciated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development as a fundamental mechanism for the restoration of peace and tranquillity in the country,” the statement read.
The fighting in Sudan has claimed over 400 lives, leaving thousands wounded since it began on Saturday, between forces loyal to Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his Deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commonly known as Hemeti.
