January 01, (THEWILL) — Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has commended residents for their unwavering support, reaffirming that his administration’s focus for 2026 remains the construction of a prosperous, inclusive, and economically diversified state.
In his New Year broadcast on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Governor described Ogun State as a community united by shared purpose rather than just a geographical entity, emphasising that progress is inevitable when citizens and government work together in trust.
Highlighting the state’s economic resilience, Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is now estimated at ₦17 trillion.
He further disclosed that Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has seen a massive surge, rising from ₦52 billion in 2020 to a projected ₦250 billion in 2025.
He attributed this growth to deliberate reforms and the “ISEYA” development agenda, which prioritizes strategic infrastructure and human capital development.
As part of the New Year celebrations, the Governor exercised his prerogative of mercy by granting clemency to 71 inmates serving various sentences across the state.
This move, aimed at rehabilitation and reintegration, provided early release for 46 inmates who had served substantial portions of their short-term sentences and released 19 capital offenders on compassionate grounds due to advanced age, infirmity, or prolonged incarceration.
Additionally, the Governor commuted the death sentences of six inmates to life imprisonment.
The Governor stressed that these individuals deserve a second chance to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
He also listed landmark infrastructure achievements under his watch, including the completion of the Gateway International Airport—widely acknowledged as one of the fastest-built international airports globally—and the construction of over 1,500 kilometers of roads across the state’s 20 local government areas.
Looking ahead, Abiodun assured residents that work is progressing on the Kajola and Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Ports, alongside expanded social intervention programs.
He reaffirmed that his administration would continue to deliver people-focused governance with discipline and transparency, ensuring that the benefits of the ₦1.669 trillion 2026 “Budget of Sustainable Legacy” reach every corner of the state.
