May 22, (THEWILL) — The Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola and the consensus governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, has won the party’s governorship primary election conducted on Thursday.
Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, secured 304,055 votes to defeat his opponent, Mr Abayomi Hunye, who failed to record any vote.
THEWILL recalls that Abayomi Hunye obtained the APC nomination form despite the party’s endorsement of Adeola as its consensus candidate by the majority of APC aspirants and leaders, including Governor Dapo Abiodun.
However, Hunye took part in the governorship primary election in his ward in Tube, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, where the exercise recorded a large, peaceful turnout of voters.
While addressing newsmen after casting his vote, Hunye dismissed claims that he had been disqualified, insisting that the large turnout in his ward reflected his popularity among the party’s members and the people of the state.
Announcing the result on Thursday, at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee for the state, Mr Wale Ohu, stated that the party had 343,292 registered voters, while 305,287 were accredited for the election, and Adeola polled 304,055 votes.
“There were two contestants; Sen. Solomon Adeola scored 304,055 votes, while Mr Abayomi Hunye polled zero.
“With these results, I hereby announce that the winner of today’s contest is Senator Solomon Adeola and will represent the party in the 2027 governorship election in the state”, he stated.
In his acceptance speech, Adeola pledged to consolidate on the achievements of Gov Dapo Abiodun and sustain peace and unity within the APC if elected governor in 2027.
The senator also commended Abiodun for ensuring a peaceful and seamless primary election process, describing it as unprecedented in the political history of the state.
I never imagined or believed that the exercise would be this peaceful. I thought it was going to be one of those usual primaries where people struggle and fight.
“But by the special grace of God, you have demonstrated that nothing is impossible with God on our side. By the grace of God, on May 29, 2027, I will be sitting side by side with you for a smooth transition of government”, he said.
The senator assured party members and residents of Ogun state that he would sustain the developmental strides of the current administration and move the state to greater heights.
In his remarks, Abiodun described the emergence of Adeola as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election as a validation of the confidence reposed in him by party members across the state.
The governor said the peaceful conduct of the primaries marked a historic moment in the over 50-year history of the state.
“Some other states may take a day like this for granted, but here in Ogun state, where this is happening for the first time in the 50-year history of the state, it is not a mean feat”, the governor stated.
