June 02, (THEWILL) — A socio-cultural organisation in Akwa Ibom State, Isong Annang Ethnic Forum, has called for greater inter-ethnic harmony, national integration and religious tolerance in Nigeria as the 2027 general elections approach, warning against attempts to inflame regional divisions through unsubstantiated allegations against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The forum made the call while dismissing claims that Akpabio made remarks considered offensive to Northern Nigeria, describing the allegations as false and capable of undermining national unity.
In a statement signed by its national president, Prince Mendy Archibong, national secretary, Elder Mfon Ebong, and national women leader, Hon. Emilia Udom, the group said its findings showed no evidence that Akpabio made comments disparaging the north or any section of the country.
The organisation stressed that Akpabio’s political career had been defined by efforts to promote unity across ethnic, religious and regional lines, arguing that attempts to portray him as divisive were inconsistent with his public record.
According to the forum, the Senate President has maintained cordial relationships with leaders and communities across northern Nigeria and other parts of the country, a development it said reflects his commitment to national integration.
It cited the traditional title of Dam Amana Azara conferred on him in Nasarawa State as evidence of the goodwill he enjoys beyond his south-south base.
The group also recalled that during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio sponsored both Christian and Muslim pilgrims, describing the initiative as a practical demonstration of religious tolerance and inclusive leadership.
It noted that at a time when Nigeria requires stronger bonds of unity, public figures and opinion leaders should avoid making statements that could deepen ethnic or religious fault lines.
The forum urged political stakeholders across the country to promote dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, rather than narratives that could heighten regional tensions.
While commending lawmakers and stakeholders from across the country for supporting national stability, the organisation appealed to Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of unity and collective progress.
The forum reaffirmed its commitment to fostering understanding among the country’s diverse ethnic nationalities and called on citizens to reject divisive rhetoric that threatens national cohesion.
