May 19, (THEWILL) – The pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced the death of opposition parties in the southeast ahead of the adoption of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, May 23, 2025, as the sole consensus presidential candidate in the 2027 election.

This was contained in a statement signed and issued on Monday by the duo of Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chief Thompson Ohia, Deputy President General and National Spokesman, respectively, of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

According to the statement, the said adoption, which followed wide consultation with southeast Governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and representatives from various youth, women, and civil society organisations, the southeast was poised to end a decade-long affiliation with the opposition.

The statement reads: “In a decisive and historic move that reverberates across the political landscape of Nigeria, the Apex Igbo Sociocultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in concert with vital stakeholders from the Southeast, is poised to announce its official endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the singular consensus candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

“This significant declaration is scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025, during President Tinubu’s visit to Abia State—the sole bastion of the opposition Labour Party in Nigeria.

“This pivotal consensus emerges from extensive consultations involving key stakeholders, including Southeast Governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and representatives from various youth, women, and civil society organisations across our vibrant region.

“The unanimous agreement signifies a new epoch, as we collectively recognise the necessity to align ourselves with the mainstream national leadership under President Tinubu, thereby formally concluding our decade-long affiliation with opposition parties such as the PDP, APGA, and LP in the Southeast. It is an assertive step towards political realignment, embodying our resolve to pivot towards progress and development by embracing the ruling party, the APC.

“In this strategic reorientation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its partners have appointed Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works and former Chairman of Southeast Governors, as the lead coordinator for President Tinubu’s campaign in the Southeast.

“Esteemed for his exemplary track record and formidable leadership capabilities, we have unwavering confidence in Senator Umahi’s ability to galvanise robust support and ensure a landslide victory for President Tinubu in the forthcoming election.

“We firmly assert that any coalition of opposition politicians presently lacks the requisite capacity to unseat a sitting president of the stature and capability of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. With unequivocal clarity, we proclaim that the Southeast shall no longer linger in the shadows of the opposition, particularly under the leadership of Mr. Peter Obi.

“On the forthcoming date of May 23, 2025, all Southeast Governors—regardless of their political affiliations, representing the APC, PDP, LP, and APGA—will converge in a historic gathering to formalise this endorsement. This momentous occasion will not merely symbolise the adoption of President Tinubu as the Southeast’s exclusive candidate but will also mark the end of a decade of allegiance to opposition leadership that has patently fallen short in advancing the interests of our people.

“As we embark upon this transformative journey, we urge all stakeholders and citizens of the Southeast to join hands in fostering unity and commitment towards this collective goal. Together, we stand poised to harness the full potential of our region, ensuring that the voices of Ndigbo echo powerfully within the corridors of national decision-making”, he appealed.
