March 28, (THEWILL) — A former Minister of State for Health, Engineer Fidelis Nwankwo, and Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that with the precarious economic situation, insecurity and failed democratic institutions, he is hopeful Nigerians will make the right choice by voting out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists in Abakaliki on the readiness of the ADC’s participation in the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the choice is for suffering Nigerians to vote out the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, considering the fact that the incumbent administration, from the federal government to the grassroots, has failed to address the plights of the citizenry.
He recalled the performance of the opposition party, like the Labour Party in the last general elections where it came third, even without any structure on ground, saying that for the past one year, ADC has been putting plans in place, boasting ADC has renowned politicians like Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rotimi Amechi, and all the rest of them to win 2027 election.
He said, “So you can see that, in the space of less than one year, July last year to now, I think, if you mention the name ADC, what is that? You know automatically what it means. We are not unaware of the power of incumbency, especially in a fragile democracy like ours, where individuals use their position to even make laws that will favour one person instead of laws for the good of the nation.
“So we are lucky to have also renowned politicians, like Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and all the rest of them. Do you remember what happened in 2023? The party that had no strength anywhere officially came third.
“Without the backhand business, without the interferences of government, they came third. So we are hoping for Nigerians, because Nigerians will make the right choice. And the first question they have to ask themselves is, are Nigerians better off today than before 2023? This is the question we need to ask Nigerians.
“And we take this message down to the critics, all the critics of Nigeria. And if the answer is no, we tell them that we have an alternative now, that we have to change things. Because if you look at the price of things, essential things now, not luxury, are unaffordable”, he said.
He also lamented the high cost of consumable drugs in the country, with specific references to diabetic and asthmatic patients’ drugs, even as he expressed suprise of what is happening in the country.
“Most of us are family men. I have parents. If you have diabetic patients, drugs that were selling for ₦2,500 are now ₦15,000. If you have asthma, an inhaler that sells for ₦9,000 is now sold for ₦13,000. Down to foodstuffs and everything. Who will ever believe in this world that we buy fuel at ₦1,400 per litre?
He further lamented the spate of insecurity in Nigeria, pointing out that terrorists have taken over the majority of ungovernable space in the country.
“I don’t want to talk about this security because that one shows we are having something close to a failed state. If this is a failed state, and Nigerians will think about it, we have terrorists in a large portion of our place, our ungovernable space, our ungovernable areas. In places like Maiduguri, you find about five local governments that are controlled by terrorists.
“The point I make is that we are intent on giving Nigeria an alternative by taking power at the federal level and down the line. I know we hear about defections. I go back and ask again, how many governors did the Labour Party have in the last election? Yes, they came a close third to the winner”, he said, assuring victory for the ADC.
