April 24, (THEWILL) — The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has fixed its presidential nomination fee at ₦50 million, as it unveiled a detailed timetable for its 2027 election primaries and national convention, while introducing targeted concessions to expand political participation among youths, women and persons living with disabilities.
The decisions were reached at the party’s 25th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja, according to a communiqué issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Martins Egbeola.
Beyond the headline presidential fee, NEC approved ₦20 million for governorship nomination forms, ₦8 million for senatorial aspirants, ₦3 million for House of Representatives seats and ₦1.5 million for House of Assembly positions.
However, in a move designed to moderate the financial burden, the party approved free expression of interest forms for all aspirants and granted a 50 percent concession on nomination fees for aspirants below 40 years, women and persons living with disabilities.
Party leaders said the pricing structure reflects an attempt to balance competitiveness with inclusivity in Nigeria’s political space, where high nomination costs have long been criticised as a barrier to entry for emerging leaders.
The NEC also ratified a compressed but structured timetable for its internal electoral processes. Ward congresses are scheduled for May 21, followed by local government congresses on May 22 and state congresses on May 23. Primaries for state Houses of Assembly will take place on May 24, while those for the House of Representatives and Senate are fixed for May 25. Governorship primaries are slated for May 26, with the party’s national convention and presidential primaries set for May 30.
According to the communiqué, the early release of the timetable is intended to ensure orderly conduct of party activities, improve compliance with electoral regulations and avoid the logistical challenges that have historically affected internal party elections.
In a parallel effort to strengthen its grassroots presence, NEC approved a three-day nationwide membership drive aimed at boosting registration and consolidating the party’s structures across the country. State chairmen and stakeholders were directed to mobilise extensively to ensure the success of the initiative, signalling a strategic push to expand the party’s electoral base ahead of 2027.
The party also addressed internal political balancing by approving zoning arrangements in Anambra State. The position of state chairman was zoned to Anambra Central Senatorial District, while the office of state secretary remains in Anambra South Senatorial District, a move aimed at maintaining internal equity and cohesion.
NEC further affirmed that elections at all levels of the party would be conducted using both consensus and direct primary methods, in line with its constitution and the Electoral Act, as part of efforts to guarantee transparency, credibility and inclusiveness.
Reiterating its broader political objectives, the YPP pledged to deepen internal democracy and strengthen its institutional framework as it prepares for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
However, the party also used the meeting to raise alarm over the country’s worsening security situation, particularly the increasing incidence of kidnapping and violent attacks across several regions. While condemning the continued loss of lives, including those of military personnel, the party called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent and decisive action to address the challenge.
