November 25, (THEWILL) — Twenty-four schoolgirls kidnapped by terrorists from a school in Maga, Kebbi State, last Monday, have regained their freedom, the Presidency announced on Tuesday.
The girls were abducted at dawn on November 17, shortly after a military detachment left the school premises, sparking nationwide concern over the rising wave of school-targeted attacks.
The President, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noted that their release comes amid a surge in kidnappings in other states, including Eruku in Kwara State and Papiri in Niger State.
All 38 abductees in Eruku were freed on Sunday, while in Niger State, 50 students of a Catholic school reported missing have since been reunited with their families.
President Tinubu praised security agencies for their coordinated efforts and urged them to intensify operations to rescue any victims still held in captivity.
“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must urgently deploy more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this”, he said.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding schools and vulnerable communities from terrorist attacks, assuring that security operations across affected regions will continue to receive full support.
