January 16, (THEWILL) — Twenty-six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, on Friday, declared their intention to continue the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of gross misconduct and persistent violations of the Constitution.
The lawmakers, who are aligned with Speaker Martins Amaewhule, also directed the Speaker to immediately reconvene the Assembly, insisting that legislative activities must resume without further delay in line with constitutional provisions.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of deliberately frustrating the activities of the Assembly, including withholding funds, obstructing access to legislative chambers, and refusing to recognise the leadership of the House, following the political crisis that has rocked the state in recent months.
According to the group, the governor’s actions had crippled legislative business and undermined democratic governance in Rivers State. They condemned attempts to give the impeachment an ethnic colouration.
“We have exhausted all avenues of dialogue. The continued disregard for the Constitution and the legislature leaves us with no option but to initiate impeachment proceedings in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution”, one of the lawmakers said.
Meanwhile, four members of the Assembly, who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment process, on Friday, reversed their decision, affirming their loyalty and solidarity with the Speaker. Details surrounding their sudden reversal remain unclear.
Efforts to reach the Rivers State Government for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
The development marks a significant escalation in the prolonged power struggle between Governor Fubara and lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which has paralysed governance and heightened political uncertainty in the oil-rich state.
